Electrifying London

UERL Extensions

From the opening of each of the various lines within the UERL group the desire of the respective managements was to extend their railways in an effort to attract further patronage. All the lines in group undertook such extensions, even prior to the takeover by the UERL. The dates of opening of each section of new line are given below.

Central London Railway

Shepherds Bush - Wood Lane -- 14th May 1908

This involved the construction of a passenger loop around the site of the depot. The new Wood Lane station was close to the White City exhibition hall & stadium where the 1908 Olympic games were held.

Bank - Liverpool Street -- 28th July 1912

In 1911 powers were obtained for a line from Wood Lane for a short distance where a connection was to be made with the Great Western Railway branch from Ealing Broadway to Shepherds Bush. This line did not open until 3rd August 1920 as work was delayed by the First World War. The CLR were only responsible for the construction of the short section from Wood Lane to Wood Lane Junction where the connection with the GWR line was made. The route onward via East, North & West Acton stations was built by the GWR. The CLR trains shared Ealing Broadway terminus not only with the GWR but also the District Railway.

City & South London Railway

Borough - Moorgate -- 25th February 1900

This enabled the original northern terminus of King William Street (which with its restricted layout had proved to be a bottleneck) to be closed

Stockwell - Clapham Common -- 3rd June 1900

Moorgate - Angel -- 17th November 1901

Angel - Euston -- 12th May 1907

After the UERL took over this railway in 1913 plans were made to bring it into line with other routes in the group. This required the rebuilding of its tunnels to the same diameter bore (11feet 8 inches) as those of the Hampstead Line, The C&SLR had been built with narrower tubes of only 10 feet 6 inch diameter. This work meant the closure of the C&SL for several months. The UERL also sought to physically link the two lines together with a junction north of Euston and an extension from Euston to this junction was opened along with the rebuilt C&SL on 1st December 1924

District, Brompton & Piccadilly / Great Northern & Strand Railways

Findsbury Park - Arnos Grove -- 19th September 1932

Arnos Grove - Oakwood -- 13th March 1933

Oakwood - Cockfosters -- 31st February 1933

From February 1932 after extensive rebuilding of Hammersmith station and the lines west of it some Piccadilly services began running over the District Railway routes from Hammersmith to South Harrow or Hounslow West. These became common place an in due course some Piccadilly line services were run all the way to Uxbridge on the Metropolitan Line. This created what is still today the longest journey by a single Underground service from Cockfosters to Uxbridge via Hammersmith.

Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway

Charing Cross - Embankment -- 1914

Golders Green - Hendon -- 19th November 1923

Hendon - Edgware -- 18th August 1924

Embankment - Kennington -- 13th September 1926

This created a southern junction with the C&SLR and formed what is today know as the Charing Cross line & City Branch of the Northern Line.

Clapham Common - Morden -- 13th September 1926

Baker Street & Waterloo Railway

Edgware Road - Paddington -- 1st December 1913

Paddington - Kilburn Park -- 31st January 1915

Kilburn Park - Queens Park -- 11th February 1915

The following sections were built by the London & North Western Railway and the dates given are those that Bakerloo Line trains began running on the sections concerned.

Queens Park - Willesden Junction -- 10th May 1915

Willesden Junction - Watford Junction -- 16th April 1917

The next page will detail some of the various types of EMU stock used on all these services
